Guest Post Mermaid Nessie: A Mermaid Year in Review

Mermaid Nessie here! Just over a year ago I began my mermaid career, and it’s been one heck of a year at that. My first fabric tail was given to me by Mermaid Mimi 3 years ago but I never saw it as more than a novelty. The story all began…

July 2013 at the World Tuna Flat Races. This was my first official gig, which I had the lovely Mermaid Mimi with me for. She soon became my mentor, and began teaching me the tricks of the trade. It was at this gig that we decided that my mermaid career needed to go farther and we began discussing new tail ideas.

In August I got to attend the Fairview Family BBQ & Fair with Mimi as new tail ideas were in the making. We began researching and ordering supplies to make my first semi-realistic  tail. We spent that entire month working, designing, painting and making the rainbow tail you see me swim in now. I also spent quite a bit of my abundant free time surprising beach-goers on the shore.

My rainbow tail (that I have named Chicklet) made its official debut during the Save Bedford Reef photo shoot in September. I got to show it off during the reef rally weeks later!

November rolled around and I worked my first birthday party with Merwrangler Marc. This was a whole new ball game for me and such a learning experience. From then on a worked many other parties and visited the Ronald McDonald Family Room in the IWK.

Near the end of December 2013 I auditioned for and became an official Halifax Mermaid! From there I worked many different events.

During March of 2014 I teamed up with Mimi for the MSVU Children Carnival and with Raina and Naida for a swim at Oak Island Inn! The pool was packed with very excited March Break adventurers.

In May I introduced my boyfriend, Merwrangler Ryan into the business. He has been a great helper, a real natural!

In June of 2014 I got to volunteer with Raina at my very first World Ocean’s Day! I learned so much, and even got to visit with some lobster friends from Luneburg who we named Larry and Lucy. The end of this month also marked the end of high school for me.

Naida, Mimi, and I kicked off July by spending our Canada hanging out at Shore Things in Eastern Passage. I even ran into some people who I had met at DND Days weeks prior.  I was absolutely floored by the crowds of people that came to see us; it was something I had never experienced before!

So now here I am. But what’s next?

As many of you may know I am finishing up my last month here in Nova Scotia and with Halifax Mermaids. Don’t fret, you can still catch me at the Mahone Bay Pirate Festival, Fairview Family BBQ & Fair and Talahassee Days!

However this is not the end for me. I will be migrating up to St. John’s, Newfoundland and will be helping expand the company to Atlantic Mermaids. I am very excited to be part of this expansion and have great hopes that it will go swimmingly. The Halifax Mermaids will keep me busy when I’m home to visit! My mermaid journey does not end here. I am very excited to see what my new home will hold for me and am very thankful to have my Halifax Mermaids here to support me.
