Hello fishy fans! Raina here with the very first blog posting for Halifax Mermaids! So exciting.

I had a previous blog before which is linked on the "links" tab on the left, but I decided I'd rather have the blog integrated right into the website.

So let's talk about all current news mermaid wise! Let's see where to start?

The spring is finally here and we're all eagerly awaiting the warm weather. Mermaid Ama has rejoined us, and Mermaid Nessie is becoming a more regular member.

Halifax Mermaids now contracts Mermaid Mimi, Mermaid Naida, Mermaid Nessie, Mermaid Ama, and Merwrangler Sean and Marc. Our little business really is booming!

I (Raina) got to be part of a really special video PSA about living your dreams recently. It was a really awesome experience. The team I worked with did great underwater filming work. It is very rare for us to have any experience like that. For our mermaid footage us mermaids and Sean generally take turns using a underwater point and shoot in merky coloured and poorly lit pools. This was only the second time we had a whole pool to ourselves and the first time the cameras were great enough to get awesome footage.

I swam for an hour non-stop only coming up for air and to discuss the next trick we'd try. Even though the pool was very clean my eyes were trashed by the end. (I picked up a wicked eye gel later which will now be my go-to in order to keep my poor eyes clear!) I was exhausted but was able to really master a lot of tricks I have been working on. I do not get much of a chance to show off my swimming ability as most of my gigs are in shallow pools for parties. This was a real treat.

Big thanks to Scott and Dave who managed it all. They're going to be giving me all the unused footage which is really awesome. I can't wait to put it all together into an underwater performing reel to use for our media kit and other things! You can watch the video below.

My company is slowly and surely getting more tails. Mermaid Ama is getting a new to us tail from Raven of Merbellas. It'll be a purple themed basic tail and Ama is very excited to have her own that is closer in measurement and will fit her tiny feet. I ordered a new silicone tail using my tax return, and I have a sequin tail that is being worked on right now too. We also just bought this new sequin tail for the company from Music City Mermaid in the hopes Mermaid Mimi can modify it to use it too. Check out the photos and video of her opening it.

Other Fun Things

Lots of other fun things are happening. You can check out the media section to see some of our latest coverage. Mermaid Mimi will be getting married which is super cool. Ama and Sean just celebrated birthdays, and both Nessie and Naida will be off to school in the fall. I'm still trucking away and will be full time mermaid for a while (need to finish my second book: Occupation Mermaid). I'm looking forward to going to see Lady Gaga this July with a good friend on mine too, and of course I picked up some awesome mermaid leggings to wear!!!

We've been pretty steadily booked and with all the chlorine exposure I've run into some health issues. I think I'll do a whole awesome blog post on dealing with chlorine. Some of my friends (Mermaid Iona) have been wonderful resources to me!

Our facebook page for Halifax Mermaids is doing well having surpassed 3k fans, and my personal fb page just surpassed 12.7k. The whole 'reach' thing has been pretty annoying though. All those fans and no one sees our stuff! So I've been branching out as much as I can. You can follow us on many sites now.

Mimi just wrapped up a community theatre show production of Arsenic and Old Lace and she's been working her tail off at that. She's prepping for her wedding and working and volunteering, and also doing some princess parties. She's all around pretty awesome. Ama and Nessie are both still in school with prom and graduation around the corner for Nessie! As for me, I just recently picked up yoga and find it helping a whole lot with my chronic pain. My health has been up and down, but I'm also enjoying picking up that guitar again.

Here's a fun little thing I did too:
Post by Raina the Halifax Mermaid.
I am planning on starting a vlog series about my mermaid life, and I'll be posting that here!

We also just got a new tablet for the business so I am excited to say that in the *future* (after we work out the details) we will be able to accept credit card payments on site!

For now I'm fairly busy planning for the Princess Tea Party which Mimi has been volunteering for for a number of years. I joined her last year and will be joining her again this year. It's always a lot of fun. I am also planning the World Ocean's Day appearance at the Maritime Museum with Mermaid Nessie. This is my 5th time doing it. These two charities are very important to me. Kids and the future of our ocean!

I hope you're all doing well and will check back here often. I hope to document many awesome things and have some great guests posting too and of course my other mermaids.

Best Fishes!

Raina, What a wonderful blog! I love that you are booking so many gigs, and that the one blackout date is Mimi's wedding, on hubby and my 39th anniversary! We got married on my Grandparents 50th! Last year, my friend's mom turned 100! So July 19th is very special date!

I can't wait for your new book to be published! I learned so much from your first one! I have another eye drop to test, post pool swimming from my optometrist. Will let you know how it works out. At least it doesn't sting on daily use at home.

Congrats on your "First Post"! Well done!
Mermaid Marla
