Raina's Biography & Resume
Raina was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Raina has been performing as a recreational mermaid since 2007, and professionally since 2009. She formed Halifax Mermaids in 2012 and then went on to form Canadian Mermaids and Atlantic Mermaids in 2014 with her business partner and boyfriend, Sean.
Raina graduated with a degree in Child and Youth Development in 2009, and a Bachelor of Education in 2012 along with receiving her NS teaching license. She did all this at Mount Saint Vincent University. Raina has been working with children and youth since she was 16 years old both professionally and on a volunteer basis.
Raina is the author of two books: "Fishy" Business: How to be a Mermaid & "Fishy" Business: My Life as a Mermaid. Raina also co-founded a digital magazine about mermaids called "Tail Flip" which ran for several years. Raina has been published in several print magazines and has contributed written pieces as well.
Raina has been a professional model since 2004 along with an ameture photographer. When she's not being a mermaid Raina sings in a rock band and enjoys playing guitar and karaoke.
Raina loves being a mermaid. It helped her overcome her learning disability and chronic illness. Being in the water helped her strengthen her body and also manage pain. Raina is always thinking, looking for ways to learn, and enjoys being creative.
Some of Raina's fun mermaid memories include:
- William Shatner tweeting her on twitter!
- Filming two music videos
-Being part of a PSA about living your dreams
-Travelling to several mermaid conventions
-Publishing two books
-Learning to do a backflip with her tail (hey- they're tricky!)
-Participating in World Ocean's Day every year
-Going to #1 on the front page of reddit
-Visiting her tail maker in Florida
-Meeting her mermaid idol Hannah Fraser
-All the smiling kids!
Raina believes in the company's vision of "The Three I's". Through her mermaid work Raina wants to inform and educate everyone about the state of our ocean; while empowering them to make a change. Raina wants to inspire people to overcome difficulties to live their dreams. Finally, Raina wants adults to recognize the value imagination plays in both learning and healthy development of all ages. Raina sometimes gets to travel around the world where she teachers other performers how to be developmentally appropriate with kids, and how to get their business going.
Raina started off as a not so great swimmer. But with a lot of practice she made it work. Raina is very inspired by Annette Kellerman, Lady Gaga, Raffi (yes- the Baby beluga guy), and author Neil Gaiman (he once shared a photo of Raina with one of his books!)
