Dartmouth, NS: The award winning company Halifax Mermaids are swimming into Dartmouth Sportsplex for a weekly mermaid school starting April 6th 2016.
Halifax Mermaids have had a mobile mermaid school since 2010, and are internationally recognized as industry leaders in their field. With concerns over children learning to use monofins- a new trending pool toy- the mermaids approached Dartmouth Sportplex for opportunities to teach safe techniques. The mermaids have been popular contractors for many public and private events at Dartmouth Sportsplex since 2010. Halifax mermaids are excited to announce this new partnership for lessons.
Halifax Mermaids take a play based curriculum approach to learning, and will be providing children ages 5-10 with mermaid monofins and tails. Children will learn the basics of mermaid swimming under the supervision of lifeguards, swim instructors, and professional mermaids. The Halifax Mermaid Swim School differs from others around the world in that it is run by a mermaid with a degree in child development, and education. Mermaids take a holistic approach to the experience, focusing on learning through play.
Monofin swimming has grown in popularity in recent years. The mermaids see it as an opportunity to empower children toward a new physical fitness skill- with monofin swimming burning up to 500 calories in an hour. Similarly, the experience empowers young girls toward physical fitness. Halifax mermaids hope to educate parents and children on safe technique while providing a safe supervised space to learn. Children get the opportunity to role play and play pretend- essential experiences for healthy child development.
Registration begins on March 7th in person at the Dartmouth Sportsplex and online. Five week sessions start on April 6th to May 4th and May 11th to June 8th. Ages range from 5-7 year olds from 5:30-6:15pm, and 8-10 year olds from 6:30-7:15 pm. Cost is $100/Child for members, $125/Child for non-members. Non-swimmers or new swimmer are welcome to join but will be required to wear a life jacket. Swimmers may be subjected to a swim test prior to the independent use of monofins/tails.
