It never fails Fishfans. While we’d like to keep you updated at LEAST once a month… we get so busy that it just never happens. It’s time for the mid-summer review with the Halifax Mermaids! Our last update chronicled most of spring… time to see what happened from the end of May and onward!

First of all, Raina has launched a new Facebook page where she is teaming up with other community leaders to help raise the professional standard in the community. Her fist collaborator is Mermaid Courtney from Vancouver. Courtney has been instructing mers on how to make tails, do underwater tricks, get a website up and running and more. She’s joining forces with Raina to help teach other mermaids. You can find our new FB page with loads of free resources here: Learn to be a Professional Mermaid. We hope this new endeavour will help other mermaids bring their level from small fry to big fish!

Our next big announcement is that we’ve done a soft launch for ourLearn to be a Mermaid lessons. We used part of our grant money to invest in fabric tails and monofins that people of ALL ages can use under our guidance to learn the mermaid swim. We surprised a volunteer we knew with her own package for her 14th birthday. Check out the video, behind the scenes, and the photos below.

One of our packages: mermaid lessons for teens!

Utilizing Mermaid Mutiny’s photographer skills we’ve also launched mermaid makeover packages. These packages are for teens and adults who maybe don’t want to swim or want a lesson, but want the chance to look like a fish out of water for a cool experience. See our new photo album below and click the link to be redirected to the booking area of our site if you’re interested. We travel, and do studio work as well.

If you didn’t know, our kitty mascot Charlie Catfish has his own fun Facebook page you can now follow for his silly antics. We want to raise awareness and funds for animal shelters.

We finished May with a freezing cold photoshoot with two local photographers. We mean COLD. While the images are stunning… we were frozen fishsicles. Check out some of the images and behind the scenes video below. You can see more photos on the mermaids individual facebook fanpages. (having some trouble getting all the files to upload here!)

We did a lot of fundraising in June for some mermazing causes. First, we did a swim fundraiser for a very special little girl… Bella! Bella has type 1 diabetes. She is a student in a part time school aged program where Raina also teaches. Bella has an insulin pump and she can even wear it in the water! Bella and the mermaids joined forces to raise money and the results were awesome. Check out the photos below.

I wanted to edit these up so nice but we're just so busy. Here are fun snapshots from the fishy fundraiser.

Next, we did a similar fundraiser for the Needham Preschool and Daycare. They are a non-profit centre that provides child care in the North End of Halifax. The mermaids had a real splash and were a big hit. Check out the photos below.

Following that Raina went in for a test swim in the Dalhousie Aquatron where she landed her first chance to swim in it! As part of Doors Open Halifax Raina taught environmental workshops and performed in the amazing research tank- the biggest one in all of Canada. Raina was filmed for the Weather Network and had Mermaid Mutiny join her for this amazing experience on Sunday. Check out the photos and videos below.

Up next we had our annual World Ocean’s Day celebration. This year was Mutiny’s first time up to bat for the awesome conservation day and she flexed her teaching muscles yet again, teaming up with second year vet Mermaid Nessie. This was the Halifax Mermaids 5th year participating in World Ocean’s Day. It was a real splash; and a big part of our educational outreach. See the photos below!

One day when Raina and Mutiny were doing a private booking at Dalplex this cool guy named Mike saw them. It turns out Mike works for HRM and wanted mermaids at several HRM events! Mimi (baby belly and all) and Raina got to work their first ever Bedford Days event and totally LOVED it. There was a huge turnout and so much fun. We look forward to booking the event next year and hope to bring a travelling tank. See the photos below.

And so came our whirlwind adventure with our awesome friend… MERMAN CHRISTIAN. Christian hails from Baltimore and is Raina adopted mer-brother. We hosted Christian in Halifax and man it sure was a splash. We did so much it’s hard to keep track. From trips to PEI, working Canada Day at Shore Things with 1000 people (while a kid chanted MUTINY MUTINY MUTINY), to site seeing, dinners, running the wave, and more.  We even met up with PEI Mermaid, Mermaid Leda. There are mermaids EVERYWHERE!

Check out our albums and albums and loads of videos from Christian’s visit.

Special thanks to Merman Christian for joining us, merwrangler Sean and Spencer, the Halifax Mermaid Team, the Fisherman's Cove Team, and Derek!

While Christian was here we all managed to perform in the Aquatron once again. Mermaid Mimi even came with her baby bump, and we got some mermazing mer-ternity photos and video. Check them out below.

It was so sad to send Merman Christian off. We know he’ll be back. But in the meantime we’re happy to announce that The Halifax Mermaids will be hosting MERMAID IONA in August! More details coming soon!

We have an amazing little merling friend who has been in and out of the hospital this summer battling illness and surgeries. Raina decided to surprise her with a visit In the hospital , and then collected gifts from mermaids all over the world to make her feel better and cheer her up. It’s amazing how much has been coming together from all these mermazing people to help support this little girl. Check out the photo albums and videos below… be sure to grab a tissue!

Raina the Halifax Mermaid surprised a fan at the hospital with her own mermaid tail and doll.

Mermaid Victoria and Raina took to Guysborough town (about 3 hours outside of Halifax) for the unique experience of our travelling mermaid workshops. We taught kids of all ages the basics and safety of mermaid swimming. It was such a splash. We haven’t had time to edit the video but for now you can see the photo album here.

Mermaid Nessie and Mermaid Mutiny participated in the first annual Nova Scotia Sea Glass festival. There was a little bit of rain but the girls showed up with a smile and glitter, of course!

Mutiny and Raina took off to Windsor to run some environmental workshops. While there we ran into a French CBC Journalist who couldn’t resist getting in on the mermaid craze. We’ll let you know when the TV spot and article launch, but for now check out of fun behind the scenes photos!

So what else is on the go? Well frankly… a lot! We have loads more public events coming up all of which are listed here.  Be sure to check back frequently as we’re constantly adding more. Be sure to check out our media page where you’ll see we were featured in The Globe and Mail, The Finacial Post, CBC, Global, The Weather Network and more!

We are getting closer and closer to Mermaid Mimi's due date. We had her lovely baby shower where she was given loads of mermaidy things. We are so excited for the first merling to be born in our group!

You may have heard there’s been a bit of concern over kids wearing monofins and mermaid tails. Raina has been directly addressing these concerns both locally and across the globe.  Raina was featured on CBC Edmonton AM , May 2015, Listen here or see the media page
Raina was featured in a CBC Calgary article, May 2015, Click here or see the media page
Raina was featured on CBC Calgary's "Eye Opener" Radio program May 2015 Click Here

Check out her related videos on the topic too. We’ll be doing up a whole blog about mermaid tail safety so be sure to check back.

After all that we're coming to the end. Here are some behind the scenes, snapshots, and things that didn't quite fit anywhere else.
Finally, Raina teamed up with an awesome local hair stylist to create this vlog on the topic of mermaid hair care! Enjoy. We hope it helps you keep your hair under control with all the summer swimming.
