End of Summer

8/26/2015

Welcome to the end of summer fishy friends! Can you believe August has swum by so quickly? Neither can we!  But not to worry sea-fans, our winters are every bit as busy as our summers so there will be many opportunities to catch up with mermaids! So let’s see what went down in the fishy month of August…

Meeting the Mayor of Halifax

Picture
First of all through a series of excellent events; Mutiny and Raina got to meet the Mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality… TWICE. We met him once during the Clam Harbour Sand Castle festival and then again during a lunch for the Prismatic Festival. The Mayor sat with us and we got to talk about our mermaid job the entire lunch. It was so great!

Natal Day in Halifax

August started off with Raina working Natal Day for HRM. It was very very warm and she enjoyed sitting under a tree with the kids. A singer sang her a funny rendition of “Under the Sea”. Check out the video and a few fan sent in photos here!

Eastern Passage Days Parade

Next, Raina transformed a special friend into a merling (that’s a child mermaid!) for the Eastern Passage Days parade! It threatened to rain but they managed to make it through. We have a few photos for now and a video later.

Photoshoot on the Halifax Commons

Meanwhile, Mutiny and Victoria took to the Halifax Commons to get some iconic photos in our Merbellas tails. Sean helped out too. Mutiny has a real talent for photography and has been teaching Sean many new photography skills so he can enhance his abilities. It seems to be working…

Mermaid Iona Visits Halifax

For those who don’t know we crowd funded to bring another mermaid to Halifax. Last month we had Merman Christian. This month we hosted Mermaid Iona from Seattle. We had such a mermazing time. From late night swimming in the ocean, to working gigs together (she volunteered), photoshoots, adventures around the city and more. Here are a few funny behind the scenes photos from her trip. And a video of Iona and Raina meeting in person for the first time despite knowing each other online for 6+ years!

Update on Miss K

You’ve all been keeping up to date on our friend little Miss K that we told you about last month. She finally was released from the hospital and got to go home! Mermaid Iona and I swam in for a visit where we surprised her with packages from mermaids all over the world to cheer her up on her healing journey. We do have quite the long video but it’s not ready yet. For now check out these awesome photos!

Our special friend that Raina visited while she stayed in the IWK got a really big surprise when she went home. Mermaids swam over for a visit!

Sand Castle Festival

The next day Mutiny and Raina worked the Clam Harbour Sand Castle Festival where an estimated 60,000 people came to swim, make sand sculptures, and see mermaids. The event was a huge success and super organized. We can’t thank the mermazing staff enough for all of their hard work and dedication. It was beautiful weather and just as the mermaids were ready to leave, the fog rolled in. Perfect timing! Check out our photos below, the photos from the event staff, and we were featured in The Chronicle Herald as well! (Congrats to the winners, the sculptures were o-fish-ally mermazing)

The Canadian Press & the Aquatron

Though we didn’t get to take many photos of our own, Iona, Raina, and Mutiny swam in the aquatron aquarium once again … this time for The Canadian Press. We are expecting the media publication soon and we’ll be sure to post it all here with videos and photos. The photographer Darren Pittman did some amazing work! We know you’ll love the photos as much as we do.

The WaegWoltic Club

Once again the Halifax Mermaids spent a day at the Waegwoltic Club… and what a lovely day it was. Mutiny, Victoria, Raina and a volunteering Iona swam for two hours in warm salt water with 100s of kids. Victoria was a trooper and posed for photos with all of the children while the rest of us answered millions of questions and swam. We’re looking forward to developing some workshops for next summer to teach monofin safety and mermaid swimming at the Waeg!

Mermaid Cove

Our last day with Iona was spent in our favourite place, Mermaid Cove. It’s a secret little swim spot that Mermaid Mimi discovered and took us to last year. Many of our memorable photos were taken there! We love Mermaid Cove because it’s sheltered, somewhat private, less busy, and warm. Though the hermit crabs are a force to be reckoned with! Here’s a few of the nice photos we took! More will be posted soon along with videos! (we promise, it's not all just photos of Raina haha)

A VERY Busy Weekend...

The weekend of the 22nd/23rd was a bit intense for us mermaids! Victoria, Mutiny, and Nessie worked the Tallahassee Days festival in Eastern Passage with our little merling in training, while Raina and Sean worked the Prismatic festival. The weather was fairly foggy and rainy all weekend but it didn’t stop people from coming out. Eastern Passage was filled with pirates and mermaids fans. Meanwhile Sean and Raina got a taste of culture and the arts at Prismatic! Also a bit of media coverage too… we ended up in the metro! Check out the photos and links below.

Workshops given on mermaid mythology, the environment, and professional mermaids. Then some fun photo ops!

Late Night Talk Show Filming

This week Raina appeared on a new up and coming late night TV show through eastlink called: Goodnight Nova Scotia. Here’s a few behind the scenes clips, you can watch for the episode in January. (Of course, we’ll post it here!)

A Little of This a Little of That

Nessie got up to some fun on a sunny day near a fishy island. Check out the beautiful video her friend helped her create, you’ll feel like you’re swimming along with her!

As always we’ve been working private parties and events having fun. We do a bit less of these in the summer and more in the winter. Here’s a few photos shared with permission

To catch you up on a few things that we didn’t have prepared to share last time; here is our video teaching mermaid lessons from last month (you’ve seen the photos) and here is our interview with French CBC.

ADP released a series of videos about our grant win. Check them out below, they’re really well done! (but Raina asks that you forgive her lisp as she’d had a dental adjustment that day!)

To get ahead of the wave of concerns about monofins, Raina spoke to CTV morning about safety when mermaid swimming! Please watch and share the video.  We’ll be adding a safety section to our website soon! Raina was also interviewed on The Sheldon MacLeod show July 2015, See here

This summer both Mimi and Marc, and Mutiny and Spencer celebrated their 1 year wedding anniversaries. Remember all the cute photos from last year? Congrats to the newlyweds. If you didn’t know, Mimi is expecting her first child… ANY DAY NOW. We can’t wait for the little merling. Sean and Raina have also celebrated 8 years dating… no weddings… yet. ;) Us mermaids are so thankful for our significant others who support us in our fishy dreamings.

Raina passed the 7 year mark for working as a mermaid, the company passed the 3 year mark, and our Canadian registration country wide has been going for over a year now. Really exciting times.

Fall is bringing with it  a lot of transition and change. Mimi's merling is on the way and three of our fish are going back to school. Mermaid Mutiny is going for her MA (English), with a research focus on Monstrous Children in Contemporary Western Film, Television, and Literature. Mermaid Nessie is going for her Level 2 Early Childhood Educator Diploma, and Mermaid Victoria is going for makeup artistry and design. Raina will be returning to working part time for an after school program along with running the business, and Sean has picked up a contract for Elections Canada.

That’s all for the fishy August. We leave with you with some funny behind the scenes….
