Sussex, NB: The award winning Halifax Mermaids are swimming into Sussex for the second annual Girl’s Empowerment Workshop: Swim with a Mermaid at the PotashCorp Civic Centre this weekend January 16th and 17th 2016.
Last year the event attracted over 100 young girls (and some boys) of all ages, and is expected to draw just as many this weekend. The event features lessons on monofin swimming, mermaid tail swimming, and photos with the mermaids, treasures and mermaid handouts, ocean arts and crafts, and snacks.
The event aims to utilize the 6 lane 25 metre swimming pool, and therapeutic pool to provide girls in the community with a unique opportunity to nurture their imagination while providing an introduction to mermaid swimming. The Halifax Mermaids operate under a curriculum that recognizes play as a strong developmental tool that can be used to reinforce important messages, such as safety, or ocean education. Recent studies show that learning through play sets children up for success in both school and later life, along with helping them to develop healthy habits and coping skills.
2015 saw young girls donning mermaid monofins and mermaid tails under the guidance of professional mermaids, and under the watchful eyes of many lifeguards and parent volunteers. Monofin swimming has been in the media recently with many concerns expressed toward safety, and Halifax Mermaids aim to enforce safe monofin swimming practice, along with educating the public on the benefits of monofin swimming. Monofin swimming trains the dolphin kick along with core strength, and can burn up to 500 calories an hour. It also allows the children an opportunity to role play and play pretend - something essential in the learning through play movement. The Halifax Mermaids plan to educate and empower this weekend.
Mermaids will be present on Saturday from 10am until 6pm, and Sunday from 8am until 12pm. Mermaids will be busy swimming but Raina the co-owner will be available during her break period from 12:30-2:00pm on Saturday, and 9:30am-10:00am on Sunday for interviews.
