Booking FAQ
Booking FAQ
Q: Do you arrive in costume?
A: Most of the time due to the limitations of our costumes, we can’t arrive in costume. We plan to be at every event early and we ask your help in securing a private area to change if we don’t already have one at an established venue. Mermaids then change and are carried to wherever you’d like us. For birthday parties we are often waiting for the water. For dry events we typically get carried out. When the event is over we do not take off costumes in front of clients, and we make every effort to not be seen in our human form leaving.
Q. What if my kid, or kids at the event don’t believe mermaids real?
A: It is not necessary that the children believe the mermaids are real. However, we ask for your help in maintaining the idea because we strive to encourage imagination and play. It can be extremely undermining to an event if adult guests start asking loud questions about our costumes, or burst the bubble by announcing the mermaids aren't real. We have found in the past that this will often lead to behavior problems where children will gang up on mermaids and the main focus of the event instead of having fun, is heckling the mermaids about being real. We want your kids to pretend and play. We have strategies in place if a child does not believe. We often encounter them one on one and if it becomes clear they aren't willing to play along we simply ask them that if they choose not to believe or not to use their imagination, that they don't ruin the fun for younger children who enjoy it. This usually works. If you see a child who is fixated on this topic to the point it is distracting the mermaids from being able to entertain guests, we ask that you intervene in a similar manner or redirect the child.
Q. What if I’d rather my kids just know you’re in a costume?
A. That’s your discretion. Please let us know beforehand so we can be prepared.
Q. Why do you require a second mermaid with more than 10 children?
A. It is for safety reasons and to be sure all children get equal attention. It can be very overwhelming, dangerous, and tiring for 1 mermaid to be with 20-30 kids alone. Similarly, mermaids can’t possibly give every child attention when there is only 1. It also helps us with managing behaviours and creating an environment to have two or more, because the mermaids can divide the kids.
Q. What does your assistant do?
A. Our merwranglers as we call them carry the mermaids around and push us on trollies. They are there in cases of emergency if a mermaid had a medical issue or got injured. If there was ever a serious need to get a mermaid out of their tail quickly, the merwrangler can do that. Merwranglers also keep an eye out for any behaviour problems to help redirect, and will address any issues of mermaids being harassed by public. Merwranglers are available to answer your questions, collect fees, and hand out information such as business cards. Sometimes merwranglers are also the photographers taking photos for your event. Just like the mermaids they have a clean criminal background check and clean child abuse registry. Merwrangler Sean is also co-owner of the company.
Q. What do I need to provide you with for a booking?
A: For water related gigs: a place to change, read and sign our booking agreement, if you have purchased photos read the photo FAQ and sign the photo release form. If it’s a birthday party we need to know the aprox number of kids, the ages and the birthday child’s name. If it’s a different water event we need to know the demographic of people. We need to know your location as we may charge a travel fee. We need a space to change (many local venues already have this)
For dry outdoor gigs: We bring our own canopy for shade. We ask that you provide water for the mermaids. A space to change. A parking space if applicable and or any parking permit that may be required. Chairs to sit on.
For indoor dry gigs: Any multimedia you may require for educational purposes (e.g. mic, projector etc). A space to change. A parking space if applicable and or any parking permit that may be required. Chairs to sit on.
Q. What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?
A. You will not be refunded your deposit. We will make every effort to accommodate you at a later date. Please let us know ASAP. Due to restrictions of time you may have to do a lesser valued package (for instance, 1 mermaid instead of 2 or no photos) if the whole staff can’t meet the rescheduled date.
Q. Do you provide a lifeguard?
A: We have a lifeguard for hire, but we encourage you to book a pool where a lifeguard is already working.
Q. Do you rent tails or sell them?
A: We sell children's monofins.
Q. Can I book more than two mermaids?
A: Yes, you will be charged 60$ for every additional mermaid.
